As soon as the thermometer tumbles down, you turn on the heating and hire the inventor of the radiator ... without thinking of the colonies of bacteria that thrive in these new hot spots. Worse or not much better, the accumulation of dust reduces the heat emitted by the device, which heats up more and consumes more. So, are we cleaning these radiators?

1 - We are preparing the ground

You know the principle, the radiator heats up. So avoid putting your hands on it before it has cooled, especially with old cast iron radiators which can cause burns. Turn off the heater and unplug it if it is electric. Yes, even for a towel dryer! Let it cool completely before cleaning and once a year, as long as it is cold, take the opportunity to purge it.

2 - Dust with a feather duster, a cloth or a sock

A feather duster is most often sufficient to effectively dust a radiator, provided you opt for the dust catcher version. otherwise the dust rises to better redeposit. Plan B, the microfiber cloth, rather effective in retaining dust but much less effective in dusting the folds of radiators. We simply choose the accessory according to the type of radiator: cloth for a flat radiator, feather duster for a tubular, finned or towel warmer. The radiator has slots and not the slightest feather duster in sight? We go to plan C as a sock: an old sock slipped on a broom handle or a kitchen spatula can do the trick.

3 - We think of the vacuum cleaner

Even simpler than the cloth and much less tiring, a good vacuum cleaner can effectively clean the radiators. However, it must have sufficient suction power to dislodge the dust in the cracks and recesses. And ideally, that it provides accessories such as a crevice nozzle or a small brush: they allow you to do professional work in every corner of the radiator, whatever its shape.

4 - We are washing

If radiators are not the most messy devices, they still end up marking. In addition to the dust, they knock on the suitcases, the vacuum cleaner and other objects, when the children do not decide to redecorate them with felt or tomato sauce. Conclusion, a sponge never hurts! If the radiator is not really dirty, you just have a damp cloth or soaked in white vinegar to degrease. If it is, place in elbow grease: a basin of soapy water, a sponge, and rub. The white radiator has yellowed? Before taking drastic measures, one can always try to strip it with a degreasing product type oven cleaner.

5 - We move on to painting

Nothing to do, the white remains yellow… Or worse, you dream of a red radiator while yours is white? Before changing the radiator, we think of painting. There are formulas specially designed for radiators, with the particularity of resisting heat. And no question of repainting the device with the remains of mural, it would end up blistering! We choose a special radiator paint by checking the specific uses: electric radiator, cast iron radiator etc. Then we put on a cap, overalls, we protect the floor and we give a second life to our radiators.
